by Kent Harshbarger Bullettes sweep at Winfield-Mt. Union The Mediapolis Bullettes swept a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division varsity volleyball match from Winfield-Mt. Union at Winfield on October 5. Even though the Bullettes swept, the first two games were close with Mepo winning 25-22 and 25-23 before coasting to a 25-13 win in what proved to be the final game.
In game one, the Bullettes opened a quick lead and were up 16-9 before the Lady Wolves went on a seven-point run to tie the score. That run upset Mepo head coach Dennis Jandrey. "We were on a six point run and then buried one in the net. That gave them a chance. It took our momentum away, but that is what we have been doing lately," Jandrey said. It was junior middle hitter Jesika McLaughlin who stepped up and rescued the Bullettes in game one. McLaughlin hammered four kills down the stretch and added a block as the visitors hung on for the win. In game two, it was Winfield-Mt. Union that moved out to a quick lead, going up 7-3 and 14-7 before the Bullettes battled back. Two more kills and a block by McLaughlin pulled Mepo to within 14-16 and she added a kill following a serve by Missy McElhinney to knot the score at 17-17. Monica Holsteen's kill gave the Bullettes their first lead of the game at 18-17. An ace serve by Krista Sterner put WMU back on top at 21-20, but a dink by Kami Keller tied the score at 21-21. WMU went back up 22-21, but kills by Keller and Marissa Dideriksen and an ace serve by Emily Kester gave the Bullettes the two points win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Game three was never in doubt. After giving up the first two points of the game, the Bullettes rode the hitting and serving of Bethany Weber to a 15-5 lead. Weber had three kills and an ace during the run. Lydia Ertz added three kills during the run. Kills by Kester, Keller, Weber, Ertz and Brittany Griffith finished off the Wolves. Jandrey was not particularly happy with
his team's play in either of the last two games. "We didn't play very well
in game two and probably didn't deserve to win. We ran some offense late
and pulled it out. We finished pretty well in that one and then took care
of our side of the net well enough to win the match," Jandrey said. McLaughlin and Weber each finished with nine kills to lead the Bullettes offense. Keller and Ertz each added five kills. Kester had 31 assists in the match. Aurey Kramer served 11 of 11 with an ace and had seven digs on the defensive side of the net. Amber Scott also came up with seven digs. McLaughlin led in blocks with five and Kester had three. Amanda Richardson and Nicole Wyss led
Winfield-Mt. Union with seven kills each. Richardson missed the third game
with an injury. Raelyn Huff had 25 assists and McElhinney two aces for the
Wolves.
