Mediapolis tops New London

  Bullettes take title of own tournament.

The Mediapolis High School volleyball team won its own tournament when it captured a title match that pitted the 13th-ranked (Class 1A) hosts against No. 14 New London Thursday in Mediapolis.

Mediapolis completed the tourney with a 4-0 record after notching a 15-5, 17-16 victory over the No. 14 Tigers, who finished 3-1. There was a cap of 17 points in an individual game.

Winfield-Mount Union and Notre Dame both finished 2-2 while Washington was 1-3. W-MU and Notre Dame played the only three-game match of the night in the battle for third place in the tournament. The Nikes eventually prevailed 15-13, 8-15, 15-13.

Ashlee Baker paced the Bullettes title effort as they opened with a 15-4, 15-8 win over Washington, then beat Notre Dame 15-12, 15-5 before sweeping W-MU 15-7, 15-3.

Baker's performance yielded 16 kills, 45 assists and 10 blocks for Mediapolis (10-3-2). Teammate Jo Kester's 21 kills and five blocks complemented Margaret Kuenzler's 25 kills and two blocks.

New London opened 15-10, 15-7 over Winfield-Mount Union then hammered Washington 15-3, 15-3 and Notre Dame 15-3, 15-9.

Courtney Pilch totaled 24 kills and 22 digs, and had four aces on 29-of-30 serving for the Tigers. Stephanie Fischer had 24 kills and 20 digs. Rylee Olsen spiked 29 kills and added 17 digs. Stacy Inglebright chipped in 20 kills. Kara Rumelhart dished out 84 assists. Jessica Rumelhart's 42-of-43 serving produced seven aces.

W-MU posted a 15-6, 15-8 win over Washington, which salvaged its night when it defeated Notre Dame 15-12, 15-13.

Mediapolis plays at the Waterloo West tournament Saturday. New London (8-3-1) plays in the Fort Madison Aquinas tournament Monday. Union tames Lady Tigers
